Quiet Storm Format Launched On WHUR By Melvin Lindsey And Cathy Hughes

When: Summer, 1977

What: When Cathy Hughes was the General Manager of Howard University’s WHUR, she urged Melvin Lindsey to use Smokey Robinson’s hypnotic “A Quiet Storm” as the theme music for a new format that featured laid back soul and R&B hits that appealed to Black women. By late 1977 it was the #1 weekend music show in DC and stations across the country began airing their own “Quiet Storm” shows.
