It’s been long rumored that Lil Wayne’s syrup-sippin’ and weed habits were helping him reach cloud 9, which in turn, resulted in some of his most creative bars (see “Dying”).

During a recent Grammys Special interview with NBC’s Katie Couric, the New Orleans rapper addressed his alleged addictions, claiming he’s no longer addicted to the codeine-cough syrup mixed concoction he’s always seen touting in a syrofoam cup everywhere he goes.

According to the rapper, drinking the Houston-born mix, also known as Lean, made his stomach hurt so bad, he had to cut back. But, Lil Wayne denied he was addicted to it.

However, marijuana is a different story. He smokes it and is proud of it, but he claims his use is for medicinal purposes only.

I will stand up for marijuana any day … I’m a rapper,” Weezy told Couric. “That’s who I am, Miss Katie, and I am a gangster and I do what I want. And I love to smoke. And I smoke.”

Weezy went on to say he smokes weed because he suffers from terrible headaches. Ones so bad, he probably couldn’t deal with them otherwise. “I have migraines that make me [want to] just kill myself,” he said.

When questioned whether his drug use would send the wrong message to his young fans that idolize him, Weezy replied, “Never in my life would I ever say, that I ever set out to be an example for people on how to live their lives,” he explained. “If you need an example for how to live then you just shouldn’t have been born, straight up.”

The “All Access Grammy Special” interview aired on CBS this week. He will also appear and perform at the upcoming 51st annual Grammy Awards, which airs Sunday (February 8) live from Los Angeles.
