On September 6th San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested and charged with battery after allegedly attacking TV hostess Tila Nguyen, internationally known as Tila Tequila.
At approximately 3.45 a.m. local time on Sunday, San Diego Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance call from a woman who claimed to have been choked and restrained by a male.
Upon arrival at the 12,000 block of Sage Crest Drive in Poway, “Tequila” told deputies she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence. “Tequila” then signed a citizen’s arrest at the scene, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment.
Merriman has since issued this statment:
“The San Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a citizen’s complaint that was initiated by Tila Nguyen [aka Tila Tequila]. I was taken into custody based upon that complaint. At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided. We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety.
“I in no way caused any harm to Ms Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported. She was released and has since returned to Los Angeles, California. There have been no charges filed against me. I want to thank the San Diego Sheriffs Department for their professionalism. I will continue to cooperate fully with the Department and I look forward to clearing my name regarding these false allegations. I want to put this behind me so I can continue to focus on a successful season for the San Diego Chargers.”
“Tequila” was transported to Pomerado Hospital while Merriman was taken into custody, said Jan Caldwell, a spokesman for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.
Tila responded to the allegations that she was drunk with her own statement via Twitter:
“I am allergic to alcohol,” she wrote. “It has been publicly known for years. That is how I got the name Tila ‘Tequila’ cuz the irony. I cant drink.”
James Brennan, owner of the Stingaree Nightclub where she and Merriman were partying, refutes that claim stating that she drank multiple shots of Tequila and vodka that night.
“It sounds like she’s allergic to the truth,” he told The Associated Press.
Tequila is a Singapore-born American singer and reality TV star. She spent two seasons as the focus of MTV’s “A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila” where both men an women competed for her affection. On December 2, 2008, Tila released a self-help book, Hooking Up with Tila Tequila: A Guide to Love, Fame, Happiness, Success, and Being the Life of the Party.
Merriman was a 1st round pick of the 2005 NFL draft from the University or Maryland and a three time Pro Bowl selection. His 39.5 sacks are the most for any player from 2005 to 2007. He sat out most of 2008 with a knee injury.
