Michael Jackson Dominates U.K. Charts
According to Billboard Magazine, Michael Jackson’s death prompted a massive surge in sales of his singles and albums in the U.K., with his “Number Ones” compilation (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) racing to No. 1, four other albums hitting the top 20, and six songs re-entering the top 40 of the singles chart.
“Number Ones,” first released in 2003, was at No. 121 in last week’s U.K. chart, but became the album most fans focused on after news of Jackson’s death, in sales on Friday and Saturday.
Jackson’s all-time bestseller “Thriller” reappeared at No. 7, its first appearance in the top 75 since 2004 and its first time in the top ten since 1984. Last year’s “King of Pop” compilation,
which reached No. 3 in September 2008, re-entered at No. 14, “Off The Wall” at No. 17 (also its highest ranking since 1984) and 2005’s “The Essential Michael Jackson” at No. 20. Additionally, the “Thriller 25” deluxe reissue reappeared at No. 45 and “Bad” at No. 59.
There is hope that the increased sales will help eliminate some of the over $400 Million in debt the super star had incurred.
