So you’ve finally gotten your mustache and beard to connect. Congratulations! But now you have to maintain it. Even more than a mustache or beard alone, upkeep on the “east” and “west” coast of hair around your mouth takes a steady hand. Here are some quick steps for making sure you are the G.O.A.T of the goatee.
1. If you’ve just washed, dry your face before you begin. Wet hair is longer and when it dries you may find you’ve trimmed too much. You don’t want to look like Charlie Chaplin when it’s over.
2. Comb your mustache straight down with a fine tooth comb. Use either the beard trimmer or scissors to trim. For a really close shave try Gillette’s Fusion Proglide razor. Start in the middle and trim first towards one side of the mouth, then towards the other. If you have clippers with a guard start with the 1/8″ or 1/4″ to see if that length is low enough for you. Adjust accordingly.
3. Use an edger like the T-Outliner or your clippers without a guard to shape the goatee. Trim away from the hair so you don’t shave off too much by mistake. A good rule to follow when trimming a mustache is to follow the natural curve of your top lip – every mouth is different, and you want your mustache to match your face.
4.Don’t contort your face to get a closer trim! You want your hairline to reflect how your mouth is at rest, not tensed up. So unless you walk around pointing with your lips all day keep it relaxed.
