New York may be the town that never sleeps, but New York, known in serious dramatic & reality show circles as Tiffany Pollard, is always working.
The actress who gained fame on the first season of “Flavor of Love” with Flava Flav, then with her own love search reality series, “I Love New York.”
Well, New York is now in Los Angeles, pursuing an acting career. But next up for the reality fave is Atlanta, for Eve Ensler’s Obie-award winning play ‘The Vagina Monologues.’
“I’m very excited. It’s a great piece and a great thing to be a part of,” said the starlet. “Just to be able to take part in this is a really big deal to me.”
Pollard told EUR’s Lee Bailey that while the show will give her acting career some legitimacy, doing the work was not totally a career move.
“It’s more of a personal stake in this,” she said. “I’m a woman and I come from a family with a large number of women in it and I heard all the stories of boyfriends cheating, of guys being verbally abusive and I myself, unfortunately, had a few guys verbally abuse me. I just want to be there and lend my voice and take part in this. It’s a celebration for women and we need to be liberated every day. So I’m definitely excited to be a part of the ‘Vagina Monologs’. It’s an important thing for me to do.”
“The Vagina Monologues” play was written (and performed) in an effort to raise awareness of the impact of violence and abuse toward women and girls. The play will feature an all African American cast in Washington, DC on Friday-Saturday, February 6&7, 2009, Dallas, TX on Saturday, March 7, 2009, in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, March 21, 2009, and in Atlanta on April 4 GA and Houston, TX. The DC performance will also feature “The Johnson Chronicles” a male perspective on “The Vagina Chronicles.”
Pollard will be in some serious company for the production. The tour also features Ella Joyce (“Roc,” “Set It Off”), SWV’s Taj Johnson George, Yvette Wilson (“Moesha,” “The Parkers”), and Wendy Raquel Robinson (“The Game,” “Steve Harvey Show,”), and co “Flavor of Love” star London “Deelishis” Charles, among others. “It’s kind of a serious actress type thingy and that’s what I’m striving to be,” Pollard said. “I really want to lend my voice and let people see that I’m there and I’m focused and I want to be a part of it.”
Coming off of reality TV, Pollard’s transition into acting may be quite a challenge. But she said she’s up for it.
“I think what people fail to realize is that before I got discovered to do this reality television thing, I already had a dream and vision in mind for my life,” she said. “I always wanted to be a dramatic actress. I know that the talent is there. I know that the passion is there. It’s going to be difficult for me to align myself in the public eye because I am known for one thing and it’s a little typical. I have to do some groundbreaking work, but I’m not a stranger to hard work.”
Pollard may not be a stranger to hard work, but her life as Pollard may be a little unfamiliar to fans.
“A lot of people call me New York still,” she said of the moniker bestowed upon her by rapper Flav. “But now that I’m living out here in Hollywood and I want to be an actress, everybody calls me Tiffany. It varies, but I still like my nickname. It’s become a part of me.”
“I’ve always been very elaborate, over the top, overstated. I would say that New York was a little bit more,” she continued. “She could be evil at some times. For the most part, New York and Tiffany Pollard are the same person. I’m more of the lover, she’s the fighter.”
Pollard said that while her public image is real, it’s not her whole personality. She explained that the public knows that she is strong-minded, but sometimes takes that for “nastiness.”
“I am a very liberated woman so I like to enjoy my curves. I wear tight clothing and a lot of makeup and to me that’s just to celebrate me as a woman. Sometimes I am misunderstood if it’s style or the way I come across.”
After picking up everything and moving to Hollywood, Pollard has taken to her acting lessons and vocal lessons. She is currently looking for management, and with “The Vagina Monologues,” the reality star will get the opportunity to be a real star.
“I’m doing some groundbreaking monologues,” she said. “I’m just keeping my fingers crossed and my prayers going up to the heavens.”
