While the film world was mourning the loss of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, actor LeVar Burton was on Twitter damn near inciting a virtual riot. When it was announced Hoffman died due to a drug overdose, the former “Star Trek” star sent out a crass tweet that left many of Burton’s fans wondering why they ever liked the guy.
Burton tweeted, “Damn, #PSH was SO talented! However, if Y’all should find me dead with a needle in my arm, in my underwear… please put my pants on!” The tweet obviously outraged fans to the point that they unleashed their anger on LeVar Burton. However, Burton wasn’t going to allow anyone to make him feel bad about his opinion so he lashed back at this followers.

One person tweeted that Burton should educate himself about addiction before tweeting, but LeVar Burton went on to say that anyway you looked at the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hoffman wasted a gift because of his addiction. After causing fans to unfollow him in droves, Burton later tweeted an apology saying he was sorry for his insensitive comments.
While most people perceive LeVar Burton to be a nice guy, I learned he wasn’t a nice guy about a year ago when a colleague of mine tried to conduct a phone interview with the actor. During my co-worker’s interview, which was recorded, Burton became belligerent and screamed at my co-worker for asking a question about his beginnings in the acting industry. After five minutes, Burton slammed the phone down and hung up on him. Since then, every time I see or hear anything about LeVar Burton, my response is, “F**k LeVar Burton and all he used to stand for!”
