According to TMZ, “12 Years a Slave” star Lupita Nyong’o says she often prayed to God asking for lighter skin when she was a child because she thought having dark black skin was a curse.
In a very sad yet inspiring speech given to an “Essence” luncheon where she was being honored, gorgeous new Hollywood “it” girl Lupita Nyong’o spoke about how she was teased growing up over her “night-shaded skin”. Lupita said she prayed God would change it.
In fact she remembers feeling so ashamed she couldn’t even look at herself in the mirror … adding,
“Every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I had been the day before.”
Take a look at the tragic tale in the video below.
Nyong’o says supermodel Alek Wek (one of the first dark skinned supermodels) helped boost her confidence simply because people like Oprah praised her for being a “beautiful woman”.
Nyong’o eventually realized that beauty is within and wants to be that same light and hope for other little girls who feel the same way that she felt. She discussed a note she received from a fan who was about to bleach her skin until she came across Lupita.
POWERFUL stuff. Anyone who misses the message here is simply not trying to see it! We SALUTE you Lupita…every last beautiful inch of you! And we for one are ECSTATIC that you didn’t bleach your skin…we love you just the way you are!
