Dear White People writer and director Justin Simien clearly has a hit on his hands. His film has gotten people of all races addressing the uncomfortable elephant in the room: the frustrations and setbacks of race in our “post-modern” world. The Houston native stopped by 97.9 The Box this morning to discuss the film. He shared that the project is a “movie about ideas” around identity, and growing up being the kid who was too Black or not Black enough in any given situation. He also shared that millennials aren’t “over race” like they’ve been typecasted, but that “people are secretly offended” in racially charged situations that they sometimes overlook.

Simien is already looking ahead of his initial success. He wants to work with Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o in the near future, and wants to create a Dear White People TV series, similar to the beloved must-see TV show, “A Different World.” With the fall success of shows like “black-ish,” this may just be the time to strike.

Check out Simien’s entire interview on 97.9 The Box.
