It was all good just a week ago. While it’s still too early to call it, it seems like the Cash Money Records demise is an ongoing theme in 2015.
The still-running feud between Lil Wayne and Birdman signaled that something was up over at Cash Money late in 2014 and ever since the label’s stock seems to have been steadily tanking. DJ Khaled is the latest artist to announce he’s leaving Cash Money and he joins a growing roster of former Birdman signatories.
“First of all, those two guys, that’s family to me,” Khaled said in a new interview with The Breakfast Club. “Lil Wayne, that’s my brother. Birdman, that’s family. At the end of the day it’s not my business. I do pray for greatness and for everything to work out. Those two people know who I am, I don’t get involved.”
Still, while he’s not butting into the “family” drama, Khaled also admitted that he’s no longer a Cash Money artist himself.
“I’m not signed to Cash Money at all,” he said. “I been off for a minute. It’s not that I’m here to promote that I been off. I’m not that type of person. That’s family. Lil Wayne and Birdman, that’s family. But, nah, it’s just We The Best. Nothing negative. Everything is beautiful.”

Khaled kept it more P.C. than some of the other recent departures, but, and no matter what you think of DJ Khaled in 2015, his leaving is still another obvious L for Birdman and company. Take a look below at some of the recent drama and public exits plaguing the label in 2015.

So the real question is…why now? In Lil Wayne’s case at least, and his is probably a fair microcosm for the rest of the artists, it seems like consistent album delays and a lack of support is driving him away from Birdman’s side. Meanwhile, Young Thug is getting much of Birdman’s attention of late so maybe everyone else is feeling a bit left out?
Either way, there’s no question that Cash Money’s glory days are numbered, even if they helped release two of the biggest albums of the last year in Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint and Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Those two remain the label’s biggest stars and they’ve been noticeably quiet amidst all the drama. If they leave, Thugger might just be Birdman’s only hope.
