From ABCnews.

There are two new films at the box office depicting poor black teenagers trying to escape their gritty urban lives. But only one of them is drawing criticism from many members of the black community.

“Precious,” the critically acclaimed drama about an illiterate black teenage girl abused by her mother and pregnant with a second child by her father, has come under fire by a number of blacks, including Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy and former Time magazine columnist Jack White.

Meanwhile, blacks, for the most part, have been noticeably silent about “The Blind Side,” the Sandra Bullock-helmed movie based on the true story of a Memphis family, the Tuohys, who take in a poor homeless black boy, Michael Oher, who becomes an NFL star.

Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips finds the discrepancy puzzling.

Find out why by clicking HERE to read more.

What do you think? Is the story of Blind Side easier to digest than Precious? Why or why not?

coming from nothing on my way to being something…both movies are touching..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LUNATIK713/ LUNATIK713

Both movies were good Precious is based on the book “Push” by Sapphire and Blindside is based on a true story. These movies shed light on things that go on everyday in our community as well as the world if anything I would say these movies inspire the viewers to do something with their life instead of sitting around and becoming a status quo statistic.

That’s only bcuz they don’t want to admit the truth about what’s really going on in the black community and what’s been going on for generations (re:Precious) and the other movie gives a lil’ more hope of something good happening for the blacks although it took a white family to give hope to the always poverished black person. Typical and cynical at the same time. And it’s always been looked at as the white person being the martyr and lead us into some kinda obligation to them. Same stuff, different scenerio.

Precious was a raw and true depiction of how child abuse can happen, whether it is blac, white or whatever race that deals with it. It just so happen that it is written and shown on film in the black community this way that is really deep and it opens the eyes to the outside world. Yes, in our black community we believe in whipping our children and then there are some who truly abuse and molest in ways that are unbelievable. I haven’t seen the Blind Side, however it shows the love of a family who is truly human take care of someone who is not their own. We as a black community do that on a daily basis, when we have to take care of our generation 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on, without the finacial security and dreams being put forth in a more positive manor. However there are the exceptions who rise above the poverty and abuse and become someone. I say one thing, we need to come together as a whole to love and care for one another in this entire world. These movies are geared to show the good, the bad and the ugly with a twist of heroism and positve outcomes. I say live in the moment and enjoy the movies, but real life it is a horrible situation for some to be in.

Saw the movie Preciuos and i thought it was good, the movie is
something real to some people and im thankful for not
growing up in those conditions.I dont see why some black
people have a problem with this movie if you can watch
slave movies with white people cutting blacks in half
and telling them they dont have souls you can watch
Precious. this movie is just letting you know whats
happening in our nieghborhood not just poor but mid-class
too. after watching this movie it made me a little more
    humble.

I’m sure many of the people on this site, will disagree with me on this. But both movies work to reinforce the white-superiority complex. Especially since these movies are often targeted at African American women, heavily applauded by critics, and given the golden stamp of negro-approval by such luminaries as Oprah and her co-harts. Who’ve made countless riches, at the expense of tearing down the image of black men. Dating back to Oprah’s career building portrayal of Harpo, in A Color Purple, which is another cinematic lynching of black men. Smart blacks, with talent in the entertainment field, know the importance of tearing down African American men. Since its one of the sure ways to get a project green lighted, and have critics on both sides take notice and lend their support. I question where Oprah, the oscar judges, critics, and the press were when movies such as Denzil’s “The Great Debaters” Terrence Howards “Pride” and Will Smiths “The Pursuit of Happyness” as well as “Seven Pounds” were either ignored or paned.

Precious, which was adapted from the book Push, written by “Ramona Lofton” who goes by the pen name of Sapphire-after a female character in “The Amos and Andy show. Is by all accounts a crafty literaly gem, which gains attention not so much for Romana-or-Sapphires craft and skill as a writer. But her ability to present shocking, snuff film like images on paper. Craftily done under the pen name of a historically sexualized black nymph Sapphire. I’m sure Ramona Lofton wrestled with whether to use Jezebell or Sapphire as a pen name.

Both Precious and The Blind side, present whites either as open minded, open hearted saviors of the lowly dark race, or a kind hand in a community of turmoil. These images that are presented too us, supposedly about us, do so to gain a reaction from us. A reaction, rarely intended to make us think critical about our lot in life, outside of finding pleasure in the scraps given to us from our great white fathers table.

the blindside is based on a true story, so you cant say much about that. but precious which i saw; i can say that it did predieve mother who are on welfare in a negative light. i can assure you that the situation in preciuos is not the norm. and it should be taken as such.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Prina82/ Prina82

Both movies are based on true stories not just Blindside. People dont like to see what really happens to many young ladies so that is why so many people are dissing the movie Precious! Marvelous you can NOT say that Precious is not the norm….sweetie IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME just because u dont read about it often doesnt mean it doesnt happen!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ladymizvee/ ladymizvee

I haven’t seen Blind Side, but from everything I have heard, it’s kind of a “feel good” type of movie…..people see it and they like it. Nothing really controversial about it, unless you have a problem with a white family taking in a black athlete who has nowhere else to go. I don’t have a problem with that at all. Precious got way more publicity, I think, because it was different. Child abuse happens all around us, but how many of us actually know an HIV-positive teenager with two children by her father, also abused by her mother? And the main character looks very different from what we’re used to seeing in Hollywood as a leading lady. Doesn’t hurt either, that Tyler Perry and Oprah were executive producers. Their backing made it possible for everybody to know about the movie way before its release. I’d say Precious was hyped way more…I had forgotten about Blind Side until I remembered seeing a preview for it several weeks ago.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/hipswang/ hipswang

I haven’t seen either one of them – but I like the idea of Blindside better because it’s a tru story. Precious just sounds like another big fat ugly black girl gets abused and triumphs story. It is created by the imagination and carries on a theme. Blindside is based on truth, Precious is based on the concept that black ppl need white ppl…

man, im have no intrest in seeing teh blindside its looks wack..i have seen precious and though i feel it was a bit extreme could u call it the norm? nah thats a stretch does it happen? most def it was raw and gave insight on what it was like for her one thing thats a fact is somewhere out in the world someone can relate or is going through the same things she did in that movie….i wouldnt buy the dvd but it def hit all elements of child abuse, ignorance, poverty, and emotional distress in young children and teens today

You know why they prefer Blindside, cause it forces black people (black woman in perticular) to realize that this who some of them are, and how they treat their kids, and what type of homes that some young black youths come from. I think its a good example, and I understood why Oprah supported this movie from the jump. I think Tyler Perry maid a good discion for bring this type of movie to the big screen, and their work an commitment shouldn’t be Ignored. We talk about Oprah, but its stuff like this that remind us that there is people living in America today that still need help, and both movies were great movies, and good examples of any youths living in poverty in America…Its the truth.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GMworker04/ GMworker04

I haven’t seen Blindside so I have no comment on the matter, however I have seen the Precious bootleg and I will say this…. That movie was a good movie. At first sight it was easy to laugh and be like damn look at that big black ugly girl but as the movie went on I started seeing her as a person struggling and began to pull for her in the movie. There are so many underlying components to the story… maybe not to the extreme of incest but women are alarmingly putting their childrens’ safety at risk just to keep the attention of a “Man”. When you let a jigga store drugs up in the house where the kids sleep at… leaving the kids at home alone to go chase jiggaz in the streets…If you watched Precious and didn’t see any significance to that movie and our “Black Community” I say you should watch the movie again there are lessons to be learned…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aaj/ aaj

Have not seen Blindside and don’t intend to. Just the premise of a large black male having to play football and a white woman taking him in and him needing a family that doesn’t look like him, is not my night of entertainment. And Precious, though it does open dialogue, I would want to see more of why the so called STATE left her in that STATE but the movie as a whole was cheap. The acting was Cheap and Tyler and Oprah could have made a better presentation. And Shem-Shem on this blog must go back and get his spelling together. Both movies leave us nowhere but in the same hole. Precious an uneducated, single mom with 2 babies (one with a disability) and with HIV. The Color Purple is what left you uplifted with hope and redemption.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SoularFlarez/ SoularFlarez

    both movies had me thinking…

“WE ARE DOOMED UNLESS WHITE FOLKS COME TO OUR RESCUE”

we dont think for ourselves, so we need someone ELSE to think for us

we dont control ourselves, so we need someone ELSE to control us

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Eolufemi/ Eolufemi

I haven’t seen either. I don’t need to be reminded that life sucks for some people, nor do I need to watch sandra save a black boy.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sherm_Sherm/ Sherm_Sherm

hipswang you wrong for that sh!t man. You just crused the selfesteem of every young teenage girl living with insecurites and probaly living with a parent that has some type of substance abuse problem crushing and them emotionally on the inside, or in some sort of abusive situation. THAT MIGHT NOT BE A TRUE STORY, but thats whats happening in America, and thats the sh!t that you don’t see, and alot of them stories don’t have no heart felt warm ending. Blindside was sad too, cause think about the guy’s that wasn’t that forunate to make it to the N.F.L. and instead probaly just became statistics.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idontdateblackgirls/ Idontdateblackgirls

I like the Blindside better because it’s a better movie overall. Precious just makes me angry that something like that can happen to a little girl(well not little physically, but by age). I mean, she starts off with a child who has DS, a mother who sexually and physically abuses her, and a father who rapes her. Then in the end ***spoiler alert*** she ends up being HIV+ and with 2 kids, no parent. Tell me you wouldn’t hate watching that too?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tbone1971/ tbone1971

this is a very stupid article ….. I have not seen either movie and I will wait until they come out on dvd…I am a action man. I didn’t realize that I was suppose to prefer one movie over the other. I didn’t read the book about the fictional character Precious but I am very much aware of the real life football player Michael Orr of the Baltimore Ravens…the Ravens lost last night on Monday night football by the way. Why would somebody be mad at how this REAL life person was raised??? Precious is a chick flick….based on fiction….If there is a preference, it would be because most guys will identify with michael orr because we see him play NFL every weekend.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/thickgurl125/ thickgurl125

their both good movies….but precious is more realistic and raw and its happening to young ladies as we speak….and blindside happens once in a while its rare that a white family helps out a homeless person especially a black male.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idontdateblackgirls/ Idontdateblackgirls

and btw, for those of you blaming Tyler Perry and Oprah, you need to know that this movie was filmed and finished waaaaaaaaay before Tyler Perry and Oprah knew anything about it. They just found out about it at a film festival, and then sponsored it so more people can be aware of it. So don’t blame the stuff in the movie on Tyler Perry and Oprah blame Lee Daniels.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/najaca/ najaca

I don’t love the idea that poor black dysfunctional families are put on blast simulataneously. There is a huge part of me that gets irritated. I didn’t grow up poor, like most of the black people I know. We had good family life and have been blessed. Where’s the story about the Black people I know that had strong black mothers and fathers? That’s what I get sick of. When they do have a movie about the black middle class, it’s over the top with everybody over-educated and living rich. That’s not reality. Where’s the balance of in between? The only movies that have come close to reality for Black middle class, are Love and Basketball, the Wood, The Secret Life of Bees, maybe Lethal Weapon, since it’s coming to mind LOL…We need more movies where we recognize ourselves in a realistic manner. Our middle class are made up of mostly tradesmen, nurses, teachers, cops, doctors and lawyers, some entrepreneurs. I do have a problem with only focusing on the ghetto, because that’s not my life. I don’t want people to look at me, and think I have effed up things going on at home. Movies have this power to influence bad stereotypes. That’s the problem with these two movies. Lets face it, movies is how other people base their opinions about Black folks. These movies affect our jobs and our opportunities, because there is such a narrow view on Black American life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idontdateblackgirls/ Idontdateblackgirls

@thickgurl, white people over here help out black teens(male or female) all the time. I don’t what you’re talking about. But it’s more rare for a teenage girl to be raped by her father, for one, but then her mother knows about it and does nothing? That’s non-existent. I don’t think there is a BLACK MOTHER who knows that her daughter is getting raped and she does absolutely nothing, no wonder that was a fictional novel, cause that stuff sure as hell is not happening in real life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/thickgurl125/ thickgurl125

i didnt say white people dont help out…i said its rare…and i know a few young ladies that was raped by there fathers/family members and there moms dont do s**t about it…and have low self esteem…so if i know a few there are alot of young ladies out here going through those problems they show in that movie…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Miss510_Redbone/ Miss510_Redbone

“Precious” was the worst movie ever, it gave white folks another reason to call us ignorant and dumb. It was just way too depressing. If I would have read the book then I would not have wasted moeny going to see the movie. But on the other hand “The Blind Side” was a beautiful movie, heart warming. exactly what we all want around the holidays…

Alot of people are not very open and accepting to the Truth…. The Movie Precious is real.. Everyday children are beat and abused beyond understanding… I think there is a part of Precious in all of us.. Until u experience this type of situation and abuse u can’t understand it.. Aids is real also.. People want to talk about some bulls**t like what famous person is f–cking another famous person.. Reality shows about nothing, but when u give them the TRUTH they don’t want that!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MamaMuli/ MamaMuli

I think I really needed to comment about this, Im sure I will get my share of hate for this too. As you might think white people consider themselves perfect of whatever, thats jus not so. White men can be monsters too and believe, we kno that. People of every race see the same dramas, you jus may not like to think that. Hell look at the news, White women everywhere are goin crazy, killin thier own babies, the Jaycee dugard story is atrocious in its own too. many bad thing in history happened at white hands and not all of us are proud. But jus so its said, cuz i kno not many would. Its not all our faults, as it might have beena white man who did something, It wasnt me. So, why would you blame me? Same with how yall dont want to be judged but something someone did or didnt do in your community. And as to the hate I have heard bout the blindside. I heard some say its only a hit cuz she was white. well since you dont think she a hero in her own right, if you dont think she did something good. how would you feel if she were black, and helped a white man? We are all on our own, we need to understand that one man cannot speak for everyone. You may not like it, but I love you all! Feel blessed today.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Karizma74/ Karizma74

tbone1971 is right – this is a stupid article. It’s a stupid debate. And yet it was more predictable than the oncoming storm system sweeping through the midwest. As soon as the Blind Side was advertised, there was the we-don’t-need-white-heroes camp sounding off. Get over yourselves! Like I said in a previous forum, you don’t like it? The BE the ones to live a noteworthy life and get YOUR story made into a movie. Good Lord. As for Precious – it’s a work of fiction based on the reality of some. But to say it’s the norm is a grossly incorrect generalization. But the fact that “we” perpetuate these ridiculous arguments about which side is right, whose story is better, and everything has to be about race is getting so old.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ShakeriaArjanee/ ShakeriaArjanee

I haven’t seen the Blindside so i can’t really speak on that movie.I have seen Precious and i think it’s an excxellent movie. i just think the movie was probaley to RAW AND FULL OF THE TRUTH for some viewers. and people i most of the people downing this movie, are looking at this movie through one level. okay alot of crappy things went on in the movie but precious overcame all of that she never gave up and she stayed positive. okay and speaking about the movie BLINDSIDE if we just did a story about him ,before he even went to stay with the family wouldn’t his story be just like precious? His crackhead mother couldn’t take care of him. his prison living father, him living on the streets. COME ONE YALL WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ShakeriaArjanee/ ShakeriaArjanee

and hipswang no white person helped precious….that was the blindside…..sweetie maybe you should get a little concept of these movies before you say something so ignorant and PRECIOUS WAS BASED ON TWO STUDENT IN SAPPHIRE’S CLASSS THAT WERE BUT TOGETHER and for you to say this looks/spounds made up……? both are products of the same enviornment so why are we even debating sbout this soooooo i’m just going to stop

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SYNCEREG/ SYNCEREG

Well I will say this i have seen “BLINDSIDE” and that was one of the better movies i have seen in a long time . it was put together very well and it was like a suprise to me that at the end it was the true story of micheal ohr . race had nothing to do with it he told his own story not what other people wanted to tell. the movie should get an award in my eye.

Precious on the other hand ,didnt want to see it cause it looked dumb from the jump. most of this can be attributed to the fact monique had alot to do with the script . It was fictional trash ,this is why people should stay in there lanes. monique is a comedain not an actress or director. She loves to justify BIG and the movie just seemed to be toooo much pilled into one movie she obeast, she poor ,she dumb, she pregnent ,and guess what the children are her fathers and she being abused by her mother WOW. This always happens when people dont stay in there lanes e.g ron artest trying to rap , master p trying to act , shaq traying to rap and act , jose consaco trying to box , micheal jackson trying to be a white chick they all ended up looking a hot mess!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tweety__bird91/ tweety__bird91

The only problem i see with the blind side is the fact that its just another GREAT WHITE HOPE movie i really commned the people that help our community no matter what color they are. However, it seems that hollywood only wants to tell the story of the whites helping the poor black ghetto children and its tiring and really puts another sense of hopelessness in our lower income communities. Now precious is not off the hook either. Yes, its true that the movie depicts reality. But again its only showing one reality over and over and over. It’s just sad, old, tired, and played out

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mealltheway84/ mealltheway84

People are criticizing Precious because that movie takes reality and shoves it in our faces. As a people, black or white or whatever, hate the truth! We take taboo situations such as incest and sweep it under the rug and we dare for folks to go cleaning. We always see films like the Blindside because that’s what feels good to us, we like getting up from that type of film and feeling good. But when you walk away from a movie like Precious, all of a sudden we have been exposed and as humans we hate to be exposed, we hate feelin naked and therefore we bash the movie sayin it was dumb or stupid or whatever when in all actuality it should push (no pun intended) someone to speak up about abuse and eventually get help..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/olivier_shawn/ olivier_shawn

I like the “blindside“ better, well for one its a well put-together movie and it reminds me as a black man that my salvation may not always from people who are supposedly my “own“, it also shows that some people in this country, dare i say it whites are not all on some “racist“ stuff
However the movie “precious“ was never tempting to me, the poster alone made me want to crawl under my blanket and stay dare for the netire day..sorry not a fan of obese people, the fact that the movie had mo`nique ( i`m not a fan), oprah and tyler perry killed any chance viewing for me
    TEAM BLIND SIDE

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/T2003J/ T2003J

Both films were good. Tho precious story was far more worst than the blind side story. Precious was one of those films that kinda messed with your sanity, and logical thinking. Any film that does that to the audience you know that was some great acting. I say precious would be the one most of us will remember a year from now

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SYNCEREG/ SYNCEREG

Here we go with this YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH look at thing when it all boils down to it this was a FICTIONAL TRASH , GOSSIP ,BULLS**T . yea it could be someones reality not likely but whatever but what did you take from the movie. It was tyler perry oprah and monique put into one oprahs kind heart moniques over the topness and love for big girls and tyler perry homosexual drama queen directing put together to make trash now that the truth.

on the flip side blindside had its o great white hope story but it also had the side where yea you may be rich but your missing alot morally, thing that even a poor homeless black boy knows.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrdowntoearth75/ mrdowntoearth75

I havent seen either movie, but I will have to agree to some point with SYNCEREG’s comment. I think alot of black directors try to feed the masses with movies that generate more sympathy then entertainment. Now do we all know someone that is obsese? Sure you do, and if you say you dont, well now you do, cause I am. She is “dumb”, ok not alot of movies out there portraying a illiterate black person, so I can give her a little credit for steping outside of the box. The “poor” issue, yeah I think we can all agree we have the concept of poor black people down pact. The same can be said about being pregnant. It seems society believes the only two things we can do well is kill ourselfs and make more babies. Then there is the “abuse”, well lets just say Tyler Perry seems to have that market covered. So to have one or two of these elements in a movie would be fine, three would be pushing it. Precious has just pushed the “poor baby” mentality too far. Monique does have a habit of pushing the “Big is Beautiful” message…. I’m not to sure about that. Now dont get me wrong, I love a woman big, small and everything in between. I can say though, as being a diabetic, being over weight isnt “cool”. Sure you have confidence and a sense of self beauty, but dont get it through mind games/tricks.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/illbound06/ illbound06

Ok, people. Do the research. Tyler Perry and Oprah did not have anything to do with the making, producing or directing of the film. They distributed it. They went to a film festival, saw the file THEN got involved to promote it and deliver it to the masses.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SYNCEREG/ SYNCEREG

    @ illbound06
if you really believe they had nothing to do with the movie your crazy.ok yea it started at a film festival but the version of a movie is always change to cater to main stream like every other film in the world . research that monique help right the script as a comedian who do you think she turned to for help? HHMMMMMMM the homosexual movie director that makes sure every one of his plays and movies star fat black people and the woman who was once a good actess and as soon as she touches something its turn into diamonds.lol e.g Diary of a mad black woman if you saw the play and the movie you would notice huge changes made for the main stream o and who backed that the same peole that backed this one

Most black people are going to have a hard time seeing “Precious” because the can’t stand to face that image of a black woman…

    SYNCEREG… ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

“NO ONE GOES THROUGH THIS?” STOP RIGHT THERE. I CAN GUARANTEE THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF YOUNG WOMEN THAT GO THROUGH THIS. I GUESS THAT IS ONE GOOD REASON TO HAVE MADE THE FILM. PEOPLE LIKE YOU LIVE IN A BUBBLE AND CLAIM THAT “THINGS LIKE THIS CAN’T HAPPEN.” WELL IT DOES. AND I THINK IT IS A WAKE UP CALL FOR BLACK AMERICA. BUT ITS FUNNY BECAUSE EVERY TIME BLACK VULNERABILITY IS EXPOSED, YOU PEOPLE LIE TO YOURSELVES AND SAY THAT “IT ISN’T TRUE.” HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT MAYBE THAT IS THE REASON WHY BLACK AMERICA HAS MADE LITTLE TO NO PROGRESS SINCE THE END OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA? BLACK AMERICA, DEAL WITH YOUR PROBLEMS! “PRECIOUS” IS VERY, VERY REAL.

THAT COULD BE TRUE FOR MANY. BUT IT ISN’T FOR ME. WHEN I SEE HER, I WANT TO HEAR HER STORY. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND HER CHARACTER. I HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE YET, BUT THIS JUST MADE ME WANT TO. @ moniQTee
first i dont recall saying no one could have this happen. and damn you speak like im some subburben uncle tom . Sorry to burst your bubble but im from south central LA and live in Oakcliff Texas so believe me i have seen some of the thing that have happen , but sorry to tell you the story was a far stretch from reality . i would love for you to name one person you know that had all of these things happen at once.. Dont worry i’ll wait !! and sorry to tell you i have never heard a parent tell there child not to go to school the welfare line is where you need to be . And you claim thats black peoples reality?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SYNCEREG/ SYNCEREG

    @moniQTee
and as for black people making progress HMMMMMM you ever think that when we stop trying to justify or faliure and start rectifying them we will start moving forward . awareness is there but simply talking about problems is just that simply talking about them. wait you waiting for the great white hope to hand it down to you ?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

moniQTee, that pattern of thinking takes strength so congradulations…

SYNCEREG, not throwing the race card, cause this is about reflection of who we are as a people. And most of “out” people by pass women who look like her for the sake of “not fitting in” by way of her aesthetics.

We have been wired to seperate based on outer appearance in this country. And black people HAVE been taught to feel anger vs. pride in out own people we dont all act that way, but it is present here in present day.

Okay wake up people this type of mess go on everyday since they put it on film ppl talking down on it. Abuse goes on and sorry it’s worse than what precious receives in the movie. We can’t just hide this or ignore it. There are some sick parents out there that need help. Do those kids not have a voice if we open our eyes to such a sensitive subj. maybe those kids can be saved.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Hellokitty111/ Hellokitty111

Well i have seen both movies and i ain’t gonna lie i cried and people need to realize it sends a message (not necessarily about race folks). With some of the comments i don’t understand what weight has to do with not watching a movie or Monique. lol I missed the first 10 mins of the movie to walk in on Precious dad on her, sorry it was gross and i almost threw up my lunch. Folks need to remember that this type of abuse happens more than folks want to beleive and it happens to all races. Race has nothing to do with abuse. Think about the girls who are forced to marry at a young age. And yes some parents don’t want to see their child become better than them or move on out and move on up. Now for the Blind Side, it was a good movie, but some of the stuff that came out of white folks mouth down in the South, wtf. I was almost embarrassed and no it wasn’t like i was surprised. I’m open for anyone of any race to take anyone in need.

I saw precious but I didn’t see Blind Side yet although it’s not hard to know what the movie is about, Precious was very extreme as far as what happened in that movie I think it was so much I mean I understand abuse does happen in real life but wow this movie…. Anyway It only takes one time for me to watch and I don’t think I would recommend this movie to anyone.

Ok …..I saw both movies and I connected with Precise more. How many time have we saw movies like Blind Side??? Yes, Prescise may have scared people a little with its realness but these things occur everyday and nobody talks about it. But everybody wanna yell keep it real (stfu) are u serious? Real is what happened in that movie. I know so many ppl including myself that this movie reminded them of points in there own life. For its like damn at least I know someone else was hurting like I was.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

I choose not to see Blind Side nor Precious…Simply because it is so RARE that black people are depicted OR the positive story isnt related to someone in the sports genre. I mean how many times have we seen the hard luck black guy who makes it to the NBA/NFL? How many times have we seen the hard luck black girl that gains some self esteem and turns her life around in the span of an hour and 45 minutes? The two are VERY predictable in content, plot and outcome…Doesnt appeal to me at all.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Brooklynbadboy/ Brooklynbadboy

Ok ,of course Blind side is going to get less criticism , the good white family that takens in the poor black kid and gives him a better life. Like c’mom wasn’t this the plot to DIFFERENT STROKES? precious hits a little 2 hard for conservatives to swallow.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/dmello559/ dmello559

People can’t handle Precious because: one they know nothing about that lifestyle or two it hits too close to home. It was not supposed to be a typical happy ending Hollywood movie. It was based on a real life and that’s why it was so real to watch. It wasn’t a fantasy made up in somebody’s head. I grew up with a single mother and she was and still is damn near as abusive as Monique minus the physical abuse. Every mother is NOT mother goose and if you don’t want to raise kids DON’T HAVE THEM!

Man this America this country is only going to show the good and easy way of life not the rough side of the mountain. In my 40 years of livung on this earth black in this country who are poor never get a fair shake or unless they kiss some whitey butt to get what they want like a Oparh Winfrey for example. It is what it is America rite? RITE

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shadsbaby07/ shadsbaby07

HONESTLY…I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE WHO CAN’T ACCEPT PRECIOUS OR CAN’T UNDERSTAND IT…DON’T UNDERSTAND REAL LIFE, THOUGH VULGAR…AND MAYBE A LIL GRAPHIC…IT IS THE TRUTH IN A LOT OF AMERICAN HOMES THESE DAYS…AND NOT JUST BLACC PEOPLE’S HOMES…I MEAN THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN THE COLOR PURPLE…AND THOUGH IT WASN’T AS VULGAR IT HAD SOME OF THE SAME IDEAS….
ANYWAY…AS FAR AS BLIND SIDE IS CONCERNED..I THINK ITS A GREAT MOVIE TOO…BUT I THINK IT SHEDS LIGHT ON WHAT THE MEDIA WANTS IT TO SHED LIGHT ON…A WHITE FAMILY WHO TAKES A POOR BLACK BOY IN… I MEAN THE ONLY CRITICISM I HEARD WAS FROM PEOPLE IN THE HOOD LIKE YEAH RIGHT A BLACC BOY IN A WHITE PERSON’S HOUSE??
I MEAN IT WAS COOL THOUGH…

Im surprised to hear so many people prefer Blind Side over Precious. I saw both. I didn’t care much for either but if I had to choose it would be Precious only because it was less patronizing. And even Precious was too depressing for me. Good acting by all bt just an ugly movie I’d rather not see again. It would be nice to see a regular movie with blacks in the lead parts instead of another black movie focused on race or the plight of poor blacks. Where are the movies about black cowboys or pirates? What about a black spy thriller, sci-fi or horror movie? As much money as we spend on movies, we should be trying to make big budget movies with our own celebs.

I saw The Blind Side-Why? I like Sandra Bullock, the NFL, football, can relate to middle -class/upper middle -class upbringing, family, umm, it is a true story and I knew the outcome was a good one. The movie made me laugh, cry, and root for this family. MichealOher found the family he wanted and mdae it his and The Touhleys found another member of their family and made him theirs.
Precious is too depressing for me. I amtired of seeing Blackmovies like this.I KNOW the acting was GREAT. Writing,GREAT.Direction,GREAT. PRODUCING,GREAT. I do not want to see these kinds of movies. I can read teh newspaper ,crime section,or even look at Nancy Grace if I want too see this and this is not a Black issue. This does not happen to all Black families. These movies make it seem that way. White families out there are pretty messed . We should use the word some.
Why not help these kinds of situations.
I like Tyler Perry, but in all of his Madea movies there is always sexual abuse. I don’t get it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lovelyldylv6/ lovelyldylv6

The fact that Precious father raped her, breeded a down syndrome child than a second child and gave her HIV. The Mother stood by and did nothing irritates me. I’m comparing Precious to Homeless To Harvard where the Mother and Father contacted Aids threw drug use passed it on to one of the two daughters. They also abused the two daughters and starved them because of drug use to the point they had to eat out garbage cans to survive. At the end one of the daughters went on to Harvard University but she still felt so alone.

Precious was an OMG movie one of my favs..blindside was good too but i prefer precious

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/C4pricorn/ C4pricorn

ummm duhh. Blindside is a ‘feel good’ kind of movie, while Precious is about this morbidly obese chick that has a hard, depressing life.
    no brainer.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/havinfunlmao/ havinfunlmao

I thought Precious was a masterpiece (directing, acting, story)and very realistic even though it was based on Saphire’s work of fiction: Push (the work of fiction was actually a composite of many real people [who actually experienced these kinds of events] that she met when she did social work in ny, so it was not really fiction; or you might say it was a fiction almost more real than true life; writers like Saphire are rare). Strangely, The Blind Side seemed like Disney fiction even though it was a true story. What was true somehow seemed a little false and what was fiction seemed ultra real. I understand the criticism leveled at both of these movies, but from a strictly artistic perpective, I thought Precious was a rare, one of a kind film. That doesn’t mean there aren’t racial issues in the film making industry, just that it was an exceptionally well done film with depth instead of the usual fluff.

i agree, i luv precious i like blindside, but it is true that blindside is a feel gud while precious is a more difficult movie to watch

Haven’t seen Blindside as yet but definitely this weekend. Precious on the other hand i really found disturbing!! I watched it 10am and my whole day was depressing… Though it was well put together i doubt if i would like to watch it again. Just wasn’t too good for my soul. Great actors i must say :-)

I’ve have seen both the Blind side and Precious.(Precious First).and if i would have to choose one to enjoy, it would be The Blind Side,i’ll explain why but First i would like t say some ultimate truth that you may/maynot know. That is that all,”repeat”.ALL Movies,Shows,Music Videos,Everything Media has a TRAGIC POINT.A tragic point to keep people into the experiene.Depending on the situation. But you need that perfect balance to have the aduience to understand and keep track of the show,or it’s plot. Too little can bore some people.(ie. News, certain reglious shows,etc..).Too much can insult people intellgence and make people believe that they are being tricked and swindled by someone to see or listen to their product,Movie or Music.(ie.All reality show’s,Talk show’s Action Movies and certain Comedies Shows etc…) and when U get older or watch your fair’s share of movies like i have you can pick up the Subliminal and hidden messages that Movies and music tend to try and seduce you with, and Most of these Tragic Points in any for of Media is a way for people to get word out and make people even more paranoid then ever.In a way this is why the world is in chaos now. I hope everyone understands.

Back to the movie I prefer the Blind Side to Precious because Michael Oher in the movie was livig terrible, struggling everyday with people who didn’t care bout him in his neghiborhood cuz if they did. He wouldn’t be in the situation in the first place. It just happen that a welathy white family happen to help him out, after they found out bits and pieces how bad his life his.the extended their help out even more. They decided to take him as one of their own.(it would be a sitcom if it wasn’t ie.Webster,Different Strokes,If it wasn’t a True Story)Turning agains their racist friends and Ignoring all the Bigot remarks that been thrown at them and at Michael, and Thru Hard work and determindation Michael Oher not only overcoming adversity, and but he became a professional Football Player,Making enough money to help out his Biologial Family.(That if if he Choose ti do so).his Choice.

But Precious on the other hand. The Movie’s poster’s cover alone has insulting my intelligence, a drama movie at best should have at least 4 or 5 tragic points at best this movie has 22.Precious is 16 year old girl with two kids,Obease, and illiterate(“personally i wonder how she can be illiterate if she goes to school at that time, and can count money ,and gets a welfare check for her daughter and check it out before she gives the check to Mary, just my opinion”)This alone should have you feeling sorry for her,and that’s just the beginning,Her mother Mary Jones played by a Devilish Mo’nique(“she’s deserve a Oscar, again my opinion”) not only hated her daughter but was jealous of her.Cuz her pedophile Hubasnd prefer his daughter over her.She could have easily left him but she Loved him so much that she’s ignoring or partipating as to what he was doing to her only daughter.sick and Vile. Also Precious oldest daughter has down syndrome, her son and her (spoiler alert) has HIV.She could have easily left her mother cuz it was only a matter of time before her mother acidentially,(or on purpose) Kills Precious or her two kids (like when she thrown an newborn baby on the chair like it was a f**kin pillow),it’s kinda pathetic that Precious’s child has to be in a life threating danger for her to leave that destructive lifestyle and worry bout her and her kids safety,Precious grandmother could have helped out but she was soo scared of Mary she didn’t want to help out Precious of mabee Precious like or enjoy that destructive enviroment.and the scary part is that if Precious Father was still alive he might have molested Precious daughter Mojo.Like i said this movie is Stupid, adding tragedy after Tragedy. With no resolve to my opinion it was Lee Daniels way of tryin to make people accept his Movie so he can make a name for Himself and get an oscar, and even thro does make you think it also insults you intelligence and plays your emotions like a Ipod and apparently it worked.(for the people who defends this movie).

There are real movies that depict child molestation, and rape that are far worst than Precious (Changeling 1998) is one of them and just because it doesn’t have a any black people in it.The Situation hits more to home then anything.and that movie is based on a True Story(or Real Life Events)However anyone wants to take it.
