The fact that Jay can still produce number 1 rap albums at 40 says a lot. In addition, Jay has always been more than just a rapper, he’s an entrepreneur. If Jay stopped rapping today he’d have several other enterprises where he could spend his time. There is no one right or wrong path. Will Smith branched out into acting and that’s great but not everyone should follow the same corny path. Not all rappers can act.

Finally, why is Hip-Hop seen, as The Roots say, as such disposable art. Rockers such as The Rolling Stones are damned near 100 years old and still going out on tour. A reporter asked ?uestlove from The Roots about getting older in Hip Hop:

I think the “Shots Fired” bit was just to grab the reader’s attention. After reading this article, there clearly were no shots fired by T.I. In fact, he did embrace Jay-Z for what he’s accomplished in hip-hop. Furhtermore, I don’t foresee Jay having a problem with what was said. These are two different artists. While both are great at their craft, they still have different paths in life. T.I. didn’t say it’s time for Jay-Z to sit down at all. the problem with our people is that we always looking at what some one else is doing. Why you think reality shows are so popular. People want to focus on what another man is doing. T.I. got the right idea in theory, but, there is a whole slew of wannabe will smiths out there. Non has had the blessing to take it to that level. I can only name one and that is Ice Cube. No rapper is making 20 million a film except Will Smith and maybe Cube and cube is doing it off his own production. You might get a tv gig like LL, Ice-T, or, flava flav, but, you aint getting that movie money(at least not yet since noone has open that up). If T,I, wanna be will smith my suggestion is take acting lessons and check out doing theatre.

On the other hand, if rap is feeding you then you probably will have to stay in that mode. It aint easy to shift into a totally new market because if it was everybody would have done that. There is a difference in thinking you to old for something until you reach that age then you press on. Many rappers dropped out of high school and have made it into a career. Just because TI got over on his looks and connections does not mean that other rappers have. Jay-Z does not have to rap and I do wish that he would let it go and just be a playboy. Angilix, well said. I’m 44 yrs. old and thought I was going to have to commit suicide after what T.I. said, as at MY age, in his eyes, I’m too old to even matter. I still listen to hip hop, I go to the movies, go to the beach, go to clubs. I do lots of stuff that 20 yrs olds do. Only difference is that I don’t have any friends in that age range. But they’re around me all the time because I do a lot of the same activities that they do. What you said put things in perspective with that comment about rock. There are bands in their 50s and 60s that make MAD DUCKETS every time they tour. Look at theose fools Metallica. They’re all in their 40s now, yet when they go on tour ALL their concerts SELL OUT. I’m sure they rake in the same ballpark paycheck that the stones do when they’re on tour.

I’m disagree with this because you got McJagger and guys like that making music still. So if your old and still want to do Hip-Hop cool. Guy like Too short, Ice-T, and Krs-one still make records. I understand how rappers say that comfortably. The music industry does it like the armed forces. They try to deal with the very young, so they can reshape their base, and manipulate then, throw ‘em away.

I’m a 41 yr old Hip-Hop Poet, not a rapper. I motivate through my music, There’s a big difference. Rappers are more fad, while Lyricists, Poets and Teachers are better designed for the long haul. I’m not saying that rappers are not as good, many rappers take it to special places of deep thought also.

I’m just saying, when I write, it’s not based on 21 year old topics. Even when I was 21 I wrote from a deeper view. So, I could see myself still making CD’s well into my 50′s, because there is always subject matter to write about. Abortion, Single Parents, Black Consciousness, Rape, Fatherhood, Lyricism, Battle styles, Violence, Street life, Overcoming struggles, etc. Yeah, I definitely will be at it in a wheel chair!

Who came up with the 30 yr. old cut off for Hip-Hop anyway? Rockers rock all the way to Social Security, Pop artists do the same. But the music genre that is black youth driven, has a 30 yr old cutoff? Wow. You know what Malcolm said we’ve been (Bamboozled)! I knew it. People are just plain “stupid.” Being ignorant is different from being stupid. One that is ignorant does not know any better. One that is stupid knows better, but chooses otherwise. As I read these comments, I laugh at all that agree it was a diss to J. I definitely understand what T.I. said. Of course he isn’t J, so him rapping at an old age would probably serve him know purpose. J is the only rapper that will always be able to rock an arena. He is just very talented at what he does. The things he have infused in his music, the audience finds it interesting. Not to say T.I. isn’t interesting, but it’s probably the fact of the ability to communicate. If T.I. gets to a point where he begins to focus on his communication skills and grammar, then he just may be able to ascend to a level where EVERYONE would want to hear what he has to say. But back to the subject at hand, the man said he doesn’t want to be a rapper all of his life. J has his own label. And when I say his own label, I do mean his own label. When you look at other record labels, the agreement that are between the label and company are set where the label takes a chance and reap all the benefits. J’s agreement is different. When you have the money to do it yourself, I mean do EVERYTHING yourself, then it has a difference in the agreement. So at this point, J has an impeccable track record where he has ran a record label and a record company. He said it himself, “I’m not a business man, I’m a business, man!” So J can make music and get paid more so like Michael Jackson, and the Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. T.I. on the other hand, I’m not sure. Not saying he can’t do it. As he said, he just doesn’t want to do it.
