With J-Dilla’s passing, producer 9th Wonder has become hip-hop’s contemporary key holder to the retrospective boom bap. Even while having producer credits for the likes of Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige and very soon Drake the North Carolina native has made it his purpose to perserve that “true school” sound by operating beneath the surface and working with battle tested independents like Murs, Wale, David Banner, Jean Grey and his former group Little Brother.

Clothing line LRG and film maker Kenneth Price followed the Grammy Award-winning music producer for a full 365 days and filmed not only 9th Wonder’s life and career during that time but also captured glowing commentary from respected music insiders like Jay-Z’s engineer Guru, 50 Cent’s former manager Sha Money XL and even J. Cole and Drake who all gush about his undeniable influence. One of the highlights of the upcoming 78-minute film, fittingly entitled “The Wonder Year”, has to be one that features 9th Wonder’s estranged former Little Brother group mate and close friend Phonte giving a rare yet revealing insight into the man and their previously fractured relationship. “The Wonder Year” is slated to drop this year.
