A rapper’s release date used to refer to their album or CD, but now it’s becoming synonymous with the end of their jail bid. We’re in an era where incarceration of hip-hop stars has become a marketing tool for reality TV shows that ignore the actual time they spend on lockdown or how it effects them afterward.

The following gallery is a partial–yet tragically long–list of hip-hop artists who are either currently incarcerated or have served time for one reason or another.
