It looks like Adidas is being forced to take responsibility for their terrible shackle sneaker idea.

Adidas halted plans to release the infamous “shackle” sneaker after a massive public outrage. The German sports apparel giant posted pictures of the potential kicks on their Facebook page yesterday. The company posted the image of the high-top sneakers with the caption, “Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?” One of the comments posted in response to the offensive sneakers was, “Wow obviously there was no one of color in the room when the marketing/product team ok’d this.”

While the sports company thought the shackles on the sneakers were a fly accessory, African-Americans were instantly reminded of slavery with the shackles. Rev. Jesse Jackson was one of the first African-American leaders to comment on Adidas sneaker designed by Jeremy Scott. Rev. Jackson said,“The attempt to commercialize and make popular more than 200 years of human degradation, where blacks were considered three-fifths human by our Constitution is offensive, appalling and insensitive.”

In response to the public outrage, Adidas released a statement:

“The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace.”

Rev. Jackson and people on Facebook weren’t the only ones offended. The Urban Daily conducted a poll asking whether the sneakers were offensive and seventy percent of the ones who answered said the sneakers were wildly offensive.

Now that you’ve had about a day to digest the sneakers for what they are worth, how do you feel about them today?
