In 1986 Spike Lee’s first feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, made a young woman named Nola Darling (played by actress Tracy Camilla Johns) the poster child for the sexual revolution. Nola debunked all societal norms by openly dating three different men with all of her suitors being aware of the others existence.
And in his 1989 film Do The Right Thing, Spike played a hard-working pizza delivery man named Mookie that only had one goal in life–to get paid.
In his latest film, Red Hook Summer, Spike tells the story of a young boy from Atlanta named Flik who is visiting his preacher grandfather in Red Hook, Brooklyn for the summer. Given that this is the conclusion of his Brooklyn series, Spike brought the two popular characters from his previous films back to let his fans see what happened to Nola in the decades since her sexual awakening and where Mookie went after throwing a trash can through the window at Sal’s Famous Pizzeria.
