When Miley Cyrus won the VMA for video of the year Sunday night, she didn’t accept her award. She sent Jesse Helt instead.

He gave a speech to spread awareness on the homeless youth in America who are “starving, lost and scared for their lives right now.” Helt continued saying that he was homeless as well.

“I survived in shelters all over the city. I’ve cleaned your hotel rooms, I’ve been an extra in your movies, I’ve been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight.”

It was all very touching, because homelessness in our country is indeed a huge problem. But now one some news has come out about Helt.

According to the Daily Mail, Helt is actually a male model. They spoke with his mother who said Helt left home in Portland, Ore., to “chase his dreams” in California.

‘He wanted to be in Los Angeles and he had opportunities and he took them, but you know, he’s had his ups and downs like anybody else.

‘It was his choice, he was always welcome, he could always come back any time. If he needed help, I’d help him, we help one another,’ she added.

During his mom’s talk to the Daily Mail, she revealed that he was on his way home back to Oregon. Cyrus met Helt when she sang at a homeless youth shelter. It looks as though he is trying to get a fresh start, and Miley’s influence will surely help.

The site Fish Wrapper is reporting that Helt isn’t homeless at all, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. It looks as though Helt wanted to make it, things didn’t go as planned, and is now homeless. How someone became homeless doesn’t change the fact that they still are. And while

Miley gave an interview to Ryan Seacrest explaining why she let Helt accept her award for her.

‘I just didn’t realize my platform, I didn’t realize my power.

She added: ‘There’s going to be talk, so what do I want them to talk about? If I’m going to be given this loud of a voice and this big of an image and this big of a platform and this huge of an opportunity to talk to young people in American right now, what am I really trying to say? Because I don’t think what I was trying to say is what happened the year before.’
