As we reported last week, the troubled MTV reality show, “Buckwild” tragically lost cast member Shain Gandee. A little over a week has passed since Gandee’s death and MTV is announcing that they have decided to cease taping of the show. They were in the middle of recording season 2, when 2 members of the cast got arrested Salwa Amin for a drug charge and Michael Burford for a DUI. Then with the sudden passing of Shain Gandee, it just seemed inevitable that MTV would decide against continuing on with the series.
The citizens of Charleston, WV where the show was filmed, never seemed to be thrilled with the attention that the show brought to their city.
Says Charleston Mayor;
“I’m relieved and happy the show is cancelled, and so is everyone around here. The show does nothing for us and exaggerates every negative stereotype about us.” “Buckwild” without Shain Gandee is like biscuits without gravy.”
Charleston, WV Mayor, Danny Jones, has had no problems expressing his disgust with the show. He made it known that he felt as though the show did nothing more than advance stereotypes about southerners and how they live. He asked for the plug to be pulled on the show weeks ago.
A rep for MTV tells TMZ :
“Given Shain’s tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him. Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately.”
We’re not sure where this leaves the remaining cast of the show. Unfortunately, these reality shows tend to hurt their participants more than they help them, once the shows wraps. The instant fame they become accustomed to having simply for being themselves goes away, and they are left back where they were before the show and it’s notoriety began.
Fame is fleeting, and sometimes it’s more addictive than any drug out there. People who have had their lives infiltrated and exploited by reality show cameras often don’t seem to think about plan b. They should be thinking about what they will do when it all goes away, before they even film their very first day of the show. We wish them all the very best of luck.
