Rapper Meek Mill fought the law and the law won. The Philly rapper filed a lawsuit against the city after a 2012 traffic stop Meek Mill felt was racially motivated.

According to reports, Meek was trying to catch a flight to Atlanta on Halloween night in 2012 when his vehicle was pulled over. The lead officer on the stop, Andre Boyer, said he pulled the car over for the dark tints then smelled marijuana in the car. The perceived marijuana smell was probable cause for Boyer to have the car searched. No drugs were found, but the traffic stop still lasted a whopping ten hours. During the ten-hour ordeal Meek Mill and his entourage were handcuffed.

When the ruling came down, Meek Mill whispered, “They ain’t from where I’m from. I [don’t] really expect them to understand what I go through.” He later added that he respects their decision despite it not being in his favor.

In the initial filing of the suit, Meek Mill’s legal team referenced the fact Boyer had more civil complaints against him than any other officer in the Philadelphia at the time. He was eventually fired for lying during an Internal Affairs investigation of another traffic stop.

The Maybach Music soldier said he was done wrong by the former cop, but the jury asserted both of them were at fault. The jury wrote a note that was read aloud in court, “Although we voted unanimously that Mr. Williams’ Fourth Amendment rights were not violated, we feel strongly both the plaintiff and defendant were in the wrong and made mistakes.”

Meek Mill was seeking $400,000 in lost income plus money for emotional distress.
