Black directors unite, and let’s all get down. That could have been the rallying call for the Black excellence that took over Twitter today.

Starting at 10 am, Black directors such as John Singleton, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tyler Perry, and Malcolm D. Lee joined Ava DuVernay for a Tweet-a-thon for the black filmmakers collective AFFRM (African American Film Festival Releasing Movement). Using the hashtag #ARRAY, DuVernay and the filmmakers have been answering questions from fans and supporters about their experiences trying to tell stories about Black people. Many of the directors discussed how they got started, making their most popular films, and gave advice to other aspiring Black filmmakers. The live chat continues until 10 PM EST, but we are gathering some of the best tweets from each discussion here.

Off the success of her critically-acclaimed film Selma, DuVernay has been pushing AFFRM again and started her second annual membership drive for the collective this month. She founded the collective in 2011 and has used it to distribute Black films that, as we all know, get overlooked by Hollywood. If you want, there is still plenty of time to jump on Twitter and ask your favorite filmmaker a question! You can also go to ArrayAction.com to learn more and become a member.
