Gone, But Not Forgotten! 14 Classic MTV Shows We Miss

 

Today in hip-hop history, the final episode of Yo! MTV Raps aired, leaving a void in television forever more.

The 2004 finale included a legendary freestyle session featuring Rakim, KRS-One, Method Man, Redman, and more. Although MTV pulled the plug on the show that brought rap to the mainstream, we will never forget the impact it had on a whole generation of hip-hop students.

There are a lot of MTV shows that instantly spark our feelings of nostalgia. Before the days of social media, people could actually sit and watch a television program without being distracted by what’s happening on their timeline – not to mention some of these picks were just unapologetically cheesy and hilarious.

Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica

Before becoming a fashion mogul, Jessica Simpson put the real in reality as she and husband Nick Lachey let MTV cameras follow them through their honeymoon stage. We also got to see how much of a “blonde” Jessica was behind closed doors. Remember her Chicken of the Sean debacle: “Is this chicken what I have, or is this fish?”

The Andy Milonakis Show 

Andy Milonakis came of out nowhere with his own sketch comedy show back in 2005. Although there was no premise or plot, Andy’s oddball antics lasted all the way up to 2007.

Diary

MTV’s Diary kicked off the new millennium with candid and unscripted footage of your favorite celebrities and how they spent their days under the spotlight. “You think you know, but you have no idea.”

Jackass

Before Viva La Bam, Bad Grandpa, and all of the other self-injuring prank shows, there was good ol’ Jackass. The show gave Bam Margera, Steve-O, and Johnny Knoxville their start in television and film. Only airing from 2000-2002, Jackass managed to become its own lucrative franchise.

Pimp My Ride 

Rapper Xzibit became a household name after hosting the hit show Pimp My Ride. People with cars in poor condition got a chance to get their ride restored and customized. The show lasted from 2004-2007.

My Super Sweet 16

My Super Sweet 16 set the bar for over the top reality shows. Teens, both famous and non-famous, were given crazy lavish 16th birthday parties, leaving regular kids feeling either hopeless or inspired. The show aired in 2005 and still comes back for special episodes, like Reginae Carter‘s own Sweet 16 bash.  

The Osbournes

Before the Kardashians, there were the Osbournes. MTV cameras followed Ozzy Osbourne and his family as they embarked on everyday family adventures with a hint of rock and roll crazy. The show aired from 2002-2005.

TRL

TRL is synonymous with MTV. The Total Request Live era has been deemed the golden age of music video television. It ran from 1998-2008 and made stars out of Carson Daly, Hilarie Burton, Sway and La La Anthony.

Cribs

MTV Cribs gave us regular people a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Celebrities of all kinds allowed MTV into their homes to show off their hard-earned luxuries. The original show ran from 2000-2011.

Daria

Before it was cool to be an uninterested, unbothered hipster, there was Daria. When most twenty-somethings hear the words ‘sarcasm’ and ‘monotone,’ they think of Daria. The show, which was initially a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-head, ran from 1997-2002.

I Want A Famous Face

Plastic surgery and reality TV had hit its peak back in 2004, when MTV’s I Want A Famous Face aired. Young people would undergo plastic surgery to get the same look as their famous idols. The controversial show only lasted one season.

Punk’d 

The hilarious hidden camera prank show made host Ashton Kutcher more famous than he already was. Punk’d aired on MTV from 2003-2007, but was revived in 2012. After ending its run on MTV, the series is moving to BET and will begin airing again in August.

Made

Made inspired young people all over the country to become everything they’ve ever wanted to be with the help of a Made coach. The show aired in 2002, but production for a new Season 16 began in April 2015.

Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach became a phenomenon when it aired in 2004. It was a modern-day soap opera for teens and twenty-somethings, and launched the careers of Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari, Whitney Port, and more. The show ended in 2006 after three seasons.
