The Emmy Awards are right around the corner, and Hollywood’s leading ladies want to discuss more than just what they’re wearing on the red carpet.
The Representation Project, which launched in February 2014 thanks to actress Jennifer Siebel Newsom, was created to point out the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. When it comes to Hollywood, actresses have been subjected to red carpet questions about their fashion and fitness regimen, rather than the work they’re being celebrated for.
Newsom talked to reporters during the Oscars earlier this year about #AskHerMore, a project launched to demand reporters ask women the same in-depth questions as they do the male stars.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
“Imagine a world where celebrities were championing their causes on the red carpet,” said Newsom. “Can you imagine the impact? Their messages would trickle down as inspiration for others to get involved in causes.” She added, “There’s so much opportunity here for the media to right the wrongs that it has been perpetuating by limiting women to [be defined by] their beauty and sexuality.”
The program is getting fans involved for this weekend’s Emmys by letting them pick out questions they want to ask their favorite actresses.
Here’s how it works:
Live tweet the Emmys red carpet with us. For pre-fab #AskHerMore tweets, click on the names of actresses, presenters, performers, and reporters below. Mix and match from the two columns to create your own custom tweets. And feel free to draft your own suggested questions, comments, and feedback – just don’t forget the #AskHerMore hashtag!
Among the list of actresses involved are Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Khandi Alexander (Scandal), Angela Bassett (American Horror Story), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Uzo Aduba (Orange is The New Black), and many more.
