When Bobby Brown announced that his daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was “awake” and “watching me” last weekend during a performance with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly in Grand Prairie, TX, not only did the audience erupt in applause, but the Internet exploded with the news and speculation that she may be finally returning to health. However, just days later, Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother, Cissy Houston, confirmed that her granddaughter had “global and irreversible brain damage,” causing more than a little bit of confusion following Bobby’s proclamation.

The truth—and reality—of Bobbi Kristina’s condition has been mired in confusion and speculation since she was placed into a drug-induced coma after being found unconscious in her bathtub back in January. Making matters more complicated has been the ongoing battle between Bobbi Kristina’s family and her boyfriend, Nick Gordon; with conflicting reports coming from various sources that may or may not be directly connected to the family, getting to the bottom of what is really going on with the 22 year old daughter of Brown and late R&B superstar, Whitney Houston, has been next to impossible.

In an effort clarify Bobbi Kristina’s medical condition, people.com recently spoke with Dr. Subhashini Ramesh, assistant professor of neurology at Georgia Regents University. Although not part of Bobbi Kristina’s medical team, Dr. Ramesh’s specialization in neuro-critical care gives her unique insights into what can be expected in terms of Bobbi Kristina’s quality of life. Dr. Ramesh concluded that, based on the length of time Bobbi Kristina was unresponsive as well as how long she was comatose, chances of her living a fully functioning and “meaningful” life are extremely slim. Even if she survives, which she very well may, she more than likely will not be able to “live an independent life and have some ability to care for herself.”
