In the presence of my family and close friends who feel the same way about the “N” word as I do (which is Black people can use it with close friends and family in private and NO WHITE PERSON IS EVER TO SAY IT TO ME EVER) I do not mind. I do however mind when Black people get a White friend, allow them to say it without redirecting them and then when another Black person corrects that White person, the two Black people end up arguing over it! When that happens it is the most ridiculous thing. So my Black people, can’t we all just agree no White person can ever say and that we won’t say it in public.

I am a black rapper who decided to bury the ‘N’ word back in 2006. I have never looked back, and I do not miss it. I’ve never needed it for ‘emphasis’ and apart from those of my fans who saw my announcement on the issue back in 2006, no-one else seems to have even noticed that the word is missing from my verses, which tells me that it really wasn’t needed in the first place. I strongly believe if black people are going to keep the word alive, then we should not be so upset when other races use it, because we keep reminding them that the word exists. As far as I’m concerned, consider it DEAD!!!

Whether you use the “er” at the end or you replace it with “a”, it still means the same word with the same meaning. How in the world do black people get offend when a white person says it but when one of they own says it, it’s ok? It’s ignorant when someone other than a black person uses it, more and less; but when a black person use on there own and/or anyone else, I believe it’s another level of stupidity. I know it’s not an over night process for anybody to do, but there needs to be an improvement as time goes on.

This term here, oh man. It has so much history behind it. True, our ancestors were called by such a term, but we can find a better way to express our thoughts and feelings without saying it so frequently in society. I will honestly admit to saying the “N-word” before but only among friends in a private setting. It is a part of my ancestral history, but it doesn’t have to be apart of my history. Also, it isn’t habitual by any means. We, as black men and women, are capable of finding other means of expressing our thoughts without the use of demeaning terms. I have grown accustomed to using other terms to replace demeaning terms in public. I know where and how tha word, Ni**er, came about and how it was used in the past. I also do not like to hear any other ethnic group to use it as well. Its only fair, right?

Personally I don’t use the “N-word” in any form. Never have and never will. I think it is a word that we as black people shouldn’t be using and we need to stop using it in any context. However, with that said, I’m not judgemental and I say to each his own. Believe it or not, just because I don’t use the “N-word”, I don’t have a problem with anyone else of any race using it as long as it is in the right context.

Where does Urban Daily get this stuff from? Everyone has some pejorative word concerning their race or ethnicity or nationality or even religion. Words have no power on their own. It is INTENT that is key. I like it when my girlfriend calls me n****r when we have kinky sex but I’d be quite offended if her Dad said the same as he greeted me. We’re NOT that close.

Identity is a prime loss in the lives of black people in America. Few of us actually know who we are by name or where we are from. No other immigrants had such a forced separation from all they are in America. Not even the Jews. So we tend to be sensitive as to how we are referred. And it makes some defensive. To us, it’s a “black thang,” easily understood and promulgated by the outside community/society.

But, now we have advanced genetics testing that can help trace our true roots. And, as SoularFlarez alludes to: nearly all of us are really a mix of everybody else.

The word has a duality at this point in time that isn’t going away. Yes we all know the dark and insulting history of the word. However, that word was taken and transformed into a term of endearment within our community and has been used in that way for decades as well. It just sort of is what it is. Appropriate? Not really, but its use has become a part of our lexicon. Now I will say this, I don’t mind if I hear black folks using it in settings where it is just us. But I don’t like this whole notion of having it on the radio waves and it being used all in the open in front of others. Other races do this type of stuff too….Using terms and telling jokes among themselves that would be insulting when done by others, but I think other races do a better job of keeping that sort of thing “in house” whereas we just spill ours all out in the street.

It’s time to stop.

Say whatever you want.
Just be prepared for the consequences of your words.

Just say “What’s up my Brother”, or “what’s up My Sister”…or if you’re attractive to that person, say “What’s up. HOTTIE?” (or BUTTAFACE)..

But I think of it in the way that girl friends use the word b!tch amongst each other in a playful way. For example…I’ve been around girls and in one instance they’ll use it in a disrespectful way. I kind of look at the N-word in almost the same way as the B-word to tell the truth..because I’ve even heard a black person use it to another black person in a demeaning way and both I and the person it was used against was offended. And I’ve heard non-blacks use it in social mellow conversations…it’s complicated. I think culture is relative also

I feel like if your not black you should not use the word at all because it means something completely different coming from you. By in large, the images that we see on TV about AA people (in general) are of single “baby mamma’s”, thugs, drug dealers, hookers and gold digging women. Sure, they do exist in the community, but so do Attorneys, Doctors, CEOs, Firemen, Teachers, Judges and Janitors! Remember when they said that the Cosby Show wasn’t real? Hate to break it to them, but I have a long line of college educated family…so it is VERY real to me.

When someone refers to another by a degrading name, they are trying to (1) hurt the other person out of fear/self preservation (2) hurt them because that is what they were taught.

This would physically difficult but follow me….if 100 black men where to make all the women of the world pregnant, all those babies would be “black” by the rules the slave masters set in place. That is scary to many non-Black men. So in order to make themselves feel better, they must make the AA male feel bad (hurt out of self preservation) before he makes all the women pregnant; because that is what he was taught.

So people who use the N word, are simply telling the world – I am afraid to be more than what master says I am. Because that mess about we are taking the word and flipping doesn’t fly. They have called us N=GGA & N===ER. That is why it hurts you “they” say it.
